Located in the historic Drostdy quarter of Swellendam, a town situated halfway between Cape and George Town in South Africa, Augusta de Mist is a charming little hideaway perfect for a weekend escape or for exploring the Garden Route, a scenic road with unspoiled beaches, mountain tracks and vineyards.
Surrounded by lush gardens with roses, lavender and herbs, Augusta de Mist is an historic estate from 1802. The white buildings have reed ceilings and yellowwood ironmongery shutters; the owners decorated the public space and the cottages in vibrant colors, adding art, craft, and vintage furniture, all inspired by Africa.
The guesthouse offers 6 suites (2 cottages, 2 garden suites and 1 family room) located in different areas of the propriety, each one with stylish interiors, and unique peaces from Africa and Europe. The cottages have fireplaces, a small movie library, music station and board games.
In summer guests can enjoy the morning breakfast under vines and in winter in front of a log fire, with homemade croissants, traditional French bread, homemade jams, omelettes, fresh fruit and coffee. For dinner they can taste the Augusta’s African Kitchen dishes, a celebration of African flavours and colors. In the menu are proposed fruit, vegetables and herbs that are grown in Augusta de Mist’s own gardens.
The saltwater swimming pool, surrounded by large willow trees is perfect for a refreshing swim and after a day around, guests can relax on the oak rocking chair or have a massage. They can also use the private library located in a separate building with a vast collection of music and books, and veranda and patios.
The team is available to organize different itineraries to visit little villages, museums, natural reserve or local farms.
